MMRC’s Extensive Fleet Acquisition

MMRC placed an order for 31 eight-coach rakes from Alstom, a renowned manufacturer, with production facilities in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh. The arrival of the ninth rake signifies that MMRC now possesses all the necessary rakes for Phase I operations, connecting Aarey to the Bandra-Kurla Complex.

Preparations and Trials

To run the 12km Phase I route, MMRC has prepared to operate a total of 110 services, providing a swift 25-minute travel time. The MMRC has also constructed stabling lines at the depot for parking the metro rakes. Trials for the new rakes are expected to begin around mid-November.

Safety and Approval Process

Following successful trials, MMRC will seek to initiate trials by the Research, Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO). Once the RDSO trials are concluded, the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) will be approached to inspect the network. Commercial operations can commence once the CMRS provides the green signal.

Innovative Technology

The new rakes are equipped with an unattended train operation (UTO) system, which automates key functions, including start, stop, door operations, and emergency handling without on-board staff. Initial operations will have a pilot, but MMRC plans to transition to full driverless operations in the coming months.

Eco-Friendly Trainsets

These new trainsets for the Metro 3 Aqua line feature a regenerative braking system, contributing to a significant reduction in carbon emissions.

The MMRC’s progress indicates that the Metro 3 line is on track to offer a convenient and eco-friendly commuting option for residents of Mumbai. With trials on the horizon, Mumbai’s commuters can look forward to the anticipated launch of this state-of-the-art metro service.

Timeline of Achievements:

– September 2018: MMRC orders 31 rakes from Alstom for 315 million euros, starting production in 2019.
– July 2022: Arrival of the first metro rake.
– August 30, 2022: Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis flagged off the trial run.
