New Delhi: The income tax department reported on Tuesday that the net direct tax collection has grown 23% to Rs 7.04 lakh crore so far this fiscal.

Nitin Gupta, the chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), said that in 2021–2022, income and corporate tax revenues reached a new high of Rs 14.09 lakh crore.

“The momentum of the last fiscal continues in this fiscal with net direct tax collection of Rs 7.04 lakh crore so far, which is a growth of 23 per cent over the same period last fiscal,” Gupta said.

Gupta stated that the I-T e-filing platform has stabilised and that as of July 31 it had facilitated the filing of 5.83 crore tax returns at the Finance Minister’s Award ceremony for CBDT personnel. On one day, a record 72 lakh returns were submitted via the platform.

The deadline for reporting ITRs for salaried people with income from the fiscal year 2021–2022 was July 31.

Gupta claimed that so far this year, I-T refunds totaling Rs. 1.41 lakh crore have been issued, an increase of 83% over the same period previous year. The head of CBDT claimed that technology is being used by the agency to boost revenue collection.
