With a profound shift to the first electric vehicles by manufacturers, Porsche seems to be working towards Introducing a first electric sports car. While there were rumor’s of the 911 going the electric route its possible that the first sports car to go the EV route would be the 718 Cayman.
The electric Boxster has been seen testing a few times. A debut of the vehicle might be expected later sometime in 2026. While the car was under camouflages the quintessential shape of the vehicle gave it away. The design was first previewed when the Porsche Mission R Concept was unveiled during the 2021 Munich auto show.
The car would possibly have a modular skateboard platform common to most EV’s. Porsche has used its innovative tech to design a new battery platform that is T shaped. Filling the center tunnel area behind the seats. Such a layout would enable the designers to give the car a low center of gravity. The car would have the battery placement similar to that of a mid engine car. Such a layout would allow the car to have better riding height and a balanced handling.
This new Cayman would possibly be expected to offer rear wheel as well as all wheel drive. The mission R concept that showcased the layout had a all wheel drive setup delivering a 670 hp in race mode and a full 1073 hp for a mode specifically designed for brief qualifying runs. The Chassis showcased the specs for 718 GT4 Cayman e-Performance.
As per the rumor’s the petrol powered engine would be kept on the shelf for as long as possible. Porsche might possibly push its Hybrid technology with ranges such a s 911 Carrera GTS range.
Porsche just like other manufacturers has profound plans to bring in new EV vehicles. But the EV performance arm of the manufacturer is almost always in popularity and hence the new 718 EV Cayman might soon be showcased by the brand bereft of camouflage.
BMW M3 Electric
BMW seems to be going the same route as that of Porsche. The BMW M3 would be powered by a 4 motor configuration. Each of the motor that is being used would power a wheel individually. Beyond that each motor would be able to infinitely vary the torque distribution as per the cars needs. For the same the car would use various sensors, along with the input of the Drivers steering angle, accelerator pressure and torque distribution. The Drivetrain would be optimized to give extra grip on slippery surface enhancing the cars ability to corner.
BMW M boss also hinted that the car might possibly have a system similar to that of the Hyundai’s simulated gear shifts . The car would also have a completely new interface that would be first introduced in the Neue Klasse series. But as per the reports by Motor Authority its possible that the gas powered version might be axed soon and the next gen 4 series and M4 to be offered with a EV drivetrain only.
